Why Dance – January 2008

The Ballroom Dance Instruction from the instructors of American Ballroom Dance Academy is excellent.

In the minds of most men, dancing is for weddings and special occasions where you end up having to dance, or pretend to dance, or even try to dance and it is not usually a pretty sight. Sure a few drinks will make you feel like John Travolta or Patrick Swayze but most often we end up looking like Elaine Benis from Seinfeld.

I was no exception to this trend. I could not find the rhythm; I was timid about getting up to dance, except for those slow ones where you just hug and rock. No one typically bothers a couple doing this because love is love, no matter what it looks like.

Stuck with this stigma, men tend to wander into their own comfort zones. Start playing golf, watching sports, working on the old homestead, etc. until that day (and we have all had that day) when the woman in our lives says, we should learn how to dance.

Oh- My- God. How the Hal are we going to get out of this one this time? We danced at the Henderson’s wedding five years ago. Wasn’t that enough dancing for the decade? Truth be told guys, there is never enough time for dancing. Women know this, but most often, reluctantly deal with the lack of interest of their partner when this subject is breached. She loves you nevertheless.

But I love my wife too and while I knew there was no hope for me to ever learn how to dance, I figured I’d try it out, make a few points I could save for a rainy day when through some turn of unforeseen events I would be in or headed for the dog house.

So I said yes. Smiling and happy with my response (‘Ka-Ching’ 10 points) she looked around for a place to learn, again. This was not new for me. I had tried on three occasions in the past, had banked a few points, but had not for the life of me found the rhythm to dance. I was just not built for it, could not find the beat and had three left feet.

She called around and located a studio in Portland Maine, American Ballroom Dance Academy and signed us up for some group lessons. What happened after that was almost magical. I put my best effort into this adventure and found myself growing even closer to her, in life, in love and all because of Dance. I wish I would have learned or pursued this sooner but had not been able to learn. The instructors at the American Ballroom certainly know the art of dance and if you doubt your ability, think again because everyone at American Ballroom learns to dance, everybody!
